| Vista Home Premium 64bit | Windows mail - transferring files from bad hard drive Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied? Thanks. Paul |

| | Re: Windows mail - transferring files from bad hard drive Yes, you can try replacing that entire Windows Mail folder. It has all the data except for some things which are kept in the registry, such as message rules, some settings, and the Blocked/Safe Senders lists. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Pauldh4" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:ea58093b08ca9a1b782658d472efddce@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | | Re: Windows mail - transferring files from bad hard drive I don't think that will work unless he has set up the accounts again, as some of the account information is also in the registry. steve "Gary VanderMolen" <gary@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eM$OW9vmJHA.5832@xxxxxx Yes, you can try replacing that entire Windows Mail folder. | | Re: Windows mail - transferring files from bad hard drive If Gary's suggestion didn't work, you can drag the messages from Explorer and drop them on the WinMail message list to get them back into the WinMail folders. See www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx and the section on Windows Mail. steve "Pauldh4" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:ea58093b08ca9a1b782658d472efddce@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home Premium 64bit | Re: Windows mail - transferring files from bad hard drive Hi Gary, Replacing the folder worked. Except for account settings. There were no message rules or blocked email list so I cannot say if they would have transferred. There was a quick message about a missing file but the box disappeared. I rebooted and all was well. Thanks for your help. Hi Steve, Thanks. You were correct about the missing account settings. I will keep the registry settings in mind if I change to a larger hard drive on another computer. When the hard drive is bad, that is cannot boot from hard drive, the registry is not available. Of course, this brings up the fact that when doing a full backup, not all Windows Mail settings are backed up. A bit disconcerting. I will have to look for a utility that will do just that. First place to check is AJ Systems. Thanks again. Paul Last edited by Pauldh4; 03-02-2009 at 03:02 PM.. |
