Re: Using Windows Mail abroad.

The process of receiving mail doesn't run into the restrictions that
sending email does. Only port 25 is blocked when away from home,
so even sending will work when using a port other than 25.

Like most POP mail clients, by default Windows Mail will remove a
message from the server after downloading it. If you don't like
that default you can change it:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select your mail account, Properties, Advanced,
enable "Leave a copy of messages on server."
You would have to make that setting change on all computers
you use to access that mail account.

OK, thanks for that. So can I just allocate another port when abroad to get
around the block? Are there any downsides to doing that? Which port would
you recommend re-setting to?

I wouldn't particularly want to alter that if I could use Windows Mail in
the normal way - which I would prefer to do rather than having to log onto
the Pipex web-site to deal with my mail.

Your advice would be appreciated!

It would seem that I 'lost' my e-mail from my on-line service because I must
have opened Windows Mail prior to going to the Pipex web-site and then left
it open so that it downloaded my e-mails in the normal way.

I have just created a Windows Live e-mail account and added that to Windows
Mail - but I note that this account still uses Port 25 for outgoing
messages.

You can only use ports that are supported by your specific mail server.
Each mail service provider normally has a web page that spells out which
port numbers are available for use.
