We don't have a whole lot of experience with Avira antivirus.
One good test would have been to do a trial uninstall of Avira,
which is a whole lot less work than reinstalling Vista.
If no improvement, you can always reinstall Avira.
Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to
upgrade to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.
