Chronic boot issues/Updating Drivers?

Re: Chronic boot issues/Updating Drivers?

OS Name Microsoft® Windows VistaT Ultimate
Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001
System Model Maximus Extreme (Asus)
System Type x64-based PC
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme CPU Q6850 @ 3.00GHz, 2997 Mhz, 4
Core(s), 4 Logical

Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0904, 12/18/2007
SMBIOS Version 2.4
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Total Physical Memory 4.00 GB
Available Physical Memory 2.92 GB
Total Virtual Memory 8.17 GB
Available Virtual Memory 7.01 GB
Page File Space 4.29 GB

DISPLAY:
Adapter Description NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
Adapter RAM 256.00 MB (268,435,456 bytes)
Installed Drivers nvd3dumx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2umx.dll, nvwgf2um
Driver Version 7.15.11.7813

SOUND: Device Mgr lists 'High Definition Audio Device" (always OK) but my
Asus Maximus Extreme mobo
user manual specifies:
"Supreme FX II Audio Card" (that is driven by a chip on the motherboard)

Booting issues ongoing for several weeks include:
Vista freezing shortly after booting
Mircrosoft wireless mouse cursor freezing likewise
Booting to black monitor
Audio speakers (during booting & freezing) sounding off like machine gun
static

Diagnostic measures:

Booting in safe mode & checking Event Viewer offers no usable clues (often &
repeatedly reporting a critical
error that says Vista closed down unexpectedly - as if I did not know?)
NOTE: Attempting to restart normally
immediately after a freeze, without going to safe mode first, will simply
result in a similar type of booting freeze.
After a safe mode boot, the system will usually reboot normally - without
the same functional monitor, mouse, or
audio issues.

Checking Device Mgr at any time has never indicated a flagged or
questionable device. Checking here for
updating device drivers always results in Vista advising that I already have
the latest available drivers.
Booting from my retail Vista Ultimate CD and selecting the repair mode still
has never indicated a problem. I am
fully backed up on a schedule but I have no good reason yet to attempt
either a system or full PC restore.

DRIVERS: My Vista is current with Windows Update but one of those 'free'
download scans by 3rd party driver
software vendors reported under 30 hardware/software drivers that are out of
date. (Hah!) Not so fast! I checked
out the manufacturer support websites of some of those listed hardware
devices & while some of those
websites are difficult to navigate - I found no confirming evidence that (1)
any of my drivers need updating (2) or
that I ought to try installing drivers that I am not sure about -
particularly when I am not sure what's going on with
my Vista, or my hardware, or both.

I am positive from my Googling that many Vista users have shared some of my
experience. Has anyone used
3rd party driver update software that has helped with similar issues? If
this posting reaches anyone who can
offer some advice - my gratitude and thanks!

Blithe

Update: Issues solved
Sorry - this was posted on the wrong newsgroup.
I replaced the monitor - it had a failing power supply.
