Cannot send email

    Cannot send email

About a week ago, I realized I could no longer send email. Same goes for my
laptop on my home wireless network. Everything has been working fine for
years and I don't recall making any changes that might affect the email.

I have changed to port 587 and checked the authenticity required box but it
didn't do any good. I went through Comcasts instructions for setting up email
using Windows Vista, but it's still a no go.

Another suggestion I read about is email scanning software. I turned of
Norton 360 email scanner but it didn't fix the problem.

Here is the error I'm getting on my desktop box when I try to send a test msg
to me (or anyone else for that matter).

"The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem,
go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having
problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper
server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '********@comcast.net.'. Subject 'Test',
Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '550 5.5.0 <*********@comcast.net.> domain missing or
malformed', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:
    0x800CCC79"

Note: I haven't contacted Comcast yet. I was hoping to fix the problem myself
    but it's not looking good.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Re: Cannot send email

    The clue is here:
    <*********@comcast.net.> domain missing or malformed

It appears you have an illegal character (a period) after the comcast.net part.

    Thanks Gary.
I checked my email account and there is no additional period after either the
incoming or outgoing entries. Both have

    ******@comcast.net

I don't know why the error message is stated like you saw.

Bad as I hate to, I'll call comcast and see what's up.

    Thanks
    Mike

If you get the same error regardless of which recipient you are sending to,
it may indicate a corrupted account. Delete the account, restart Windows Mail,
    then recreate the account.

    Re: Cannot send email

    Hi Gary,

I've experienced the same problem: all computers in my home suddenly not
being able to send mail (receive is fine). Here's the error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
    'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I've tried changing the numbers from 25 to 26 and to 587. I've deleted the
account and re-installed the account. My next thought is to delete Windows
Mail and re-install. Any other suggestions?!

    Thanks

I've solved the problem. Thanks! It turns out you have to do ALL the things
you suggest - delete the email account and start over using the settings
listed on the comcast site (port 587 with authentication required).
Ironically, I was on the phone with someone from comcast last week and he was
not able to solve this problem.

    Re: Cannot send email

Just like Eric, my problem has been solved. I deleted my email account and
recreated it. Now everything works OK. Same goes for my wifes account.

It just seems strange that all of a sudden all of our email accounts quit
working, even the one on my laptop. I still have to recreate it. Hopefully,
    it will work OK also.

    Thanks for the help everyone

Glad to hear you got it resolved.
Unfortunately, the tech support personnel employed by ISPs are often
paid little more than minimum wage, which doesn't attract the cream of
    the crop. ;-)

If you're talking about Comcast, they are gradually dropping support
for port 25 SMTP all over the country.
