Vista - Opening Attachments

Thanks for the clue as to what happened. Didn't have issues opening
attachments in Windows Mail until IE8 installed several days ago. Restoring
Default Program settings for Windows mail did the trick. Thank you! IE8
however, will be short-lived. No one in the family likes it and it's response
time is very poor on my Vista (ult. 64-bit) system. IE7 performed much better.

If you uninstall IE8, follow these directions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

In the future, please quote the message you are responding to,

Do you mean setting the defaults with "Control Panel | Default Programs
"?
If so you seem not to have had the IE8-WinMail problem.

Which file types if the attachments could not be opened before you fixed
things?

I take the liberty to disagree.
IE8 has quite many advantages. And it really is a lot faster than its
predecessor.
