can't send to bellsouth newsgroup via vista 64 bit OS

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Vista 64 bit and am setting it up, etc. I have
a problem with the newsgroup part of windows mail. I still have my old
laptop
and it still posts to the newsgroups via outlook express 6. I'm using it
right now.
Incidentally, Bellsouth/ATT is going to drop newsgroups next month.

I have the same settings for the account in both laptops.
This one is running XP pro.
When I set up the acct on the Vista one, the headers came in as
usual. Everything works as usual, except when I click on send, it doesn't
send. I get an error message instead. I get this one:
"windows mail could not post your message. etc...snip.. 441posting failed
rejected by post filter port 119,secure (ssl): no, server error :401 error
number: 0x800CCCA9"
Is there a hidden trick to setting it up so it sends? I searched the net
and one guy had the
same problem and resolved it by changing the mimo to uuncode, or something
like that, I forget exactly what they were, but I found them buried in a
menur on my system somewhere, and
made the change but it didn't fix mine.
thanks for any ideas.
Alan

Re: can't send to bellsouth newsgroup via vista 64 bit OS

Post the complete (verbatim) error message.

Does this only happen when posting a Reply to a newsgroup thread?

Tip: In Windows Mail go to Tools, Options, Send, News Sending Format,
make sure Plain Text is selected, then click on its Plain Text Settings
button. Select Uuencode, click OK.

Make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan outgoing messages.

As to your remark about AT&T dropping support for newsgroups,
I'm in the same boat. I suggest getting a free news account via
http://www.motzarella.org/

I used the reply group button, but i just
tried typing in the subject and the same
error message popped up.

I have no trouble posting to this newsgroup
so its something specific to bellsouth/att
I guess.

.......... ok, that's something I haven't looked into. This laptop came
with Norton on it, and I haven't
used Norton since before the flood, so it will proable take me a while.

Re: can't send to bellsouth newsgroup via vista 64 bit OS

You might as well bite the bullet and switch to the news.motzarella.org
server now, because by July 15th that newsgroups.bellsouth.net server
will stop working altogether.
