Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML messages

Hi there

Something odd has happened to my machine. I was receiving HTML emails fine
and attachments up till about 7th of this month. Since then, all messages
are displaying as plain text and come without attachments.

I have checked the security settings and there's nothing blocking
attachments, I have unchecked the 'read all as plain text' in the options
too, and I've disapled NIS2009 email scanning but the problem persists. I've
also tried restoring to IE7 and still no dice. I'm at my wits end.

Anyone got any clues?

Beac.

Uninstall NIS, reboot, see if the problem goes away

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Master Beac:

I believe I have the same problem as you do and it happened 4 days after
yours, and just after an automatic update Vista made during the night.

Check my post dated 6/11 "WM stop showing messages, they are all shown as
..html attachment".

I am running WM without NIS, so I do not think that is going to solve your
problem, but you can try.

I was also suggested to migrate from WM to Windows Live Mail, I did that
today and the problem remains ALSO in WLM, so definitely is a hidden security
configuration in Vista that is blocking WM to show the messages in .html
format.

I uninstalled IE8 and went back to IE7, I uninstalled all updates since 6/11
and still unable to solve the problem.

I will install Outlook 2007 tonight, wish me luck. I purchased it 2 years
ago, but I used for a couple of hours and decided to go back to WM at that
time. I do NOT like Outlook :-(

We need our good friends of Microsoft to look into this problem as it not
normal. Hopefully the can come up with a solution in the following days.

I am sorry I did not give you a solution, but believe me, I understand your
frustration.

Your friend.

Rodrigo Diaz.

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Instead of going to the bother of installing Outlook, why not do a trial install
of Windows Live Mail? At least the latter will import all your WM stuff
automatically.

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Hi. I have installed live mail and it's still doing the same thing. It's
infuriating. I've installed Thunderbird as an alternative news reader.
Emails in thunderbird are also as plain text but they come with a
winmail.dat attachment. Any more suggestions?

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Master Beac:

Good morning.

I have EXCELLENT NEWS... I am not sure what happened, but this morning WM is
working normally as it was before the problem.

I did not have a time to install Outlook yesterday night, so I did not do
anything and the problem is gone now.

The only different thing that I did before I opened WM this morning is that
I got a message from my laptop saying that the hard disk was almost full and
that I should delete some files.

I need to mention that I had 30 GB of free space, but when I installed
Windows Live Mail and imported the WM folders the free space was reduced to
less than 0.5 GB, this was yesterday.

Vista opened the application to free disk space and I deleted everything it
suggested, it included the hibernation file.

Well, after doing that I opened WM to see if someone had posted a solution
to our problem and WM is now working fine.

As I said, I am not sure what I did or what happened, but you might want to
run the application to free space of your hard disk. Perhaps it can help you.

Wish you luck my friend.

Regards.

Rodrigo Diaz.

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Thanks. I've had no end of hassle with this problem. I tried restoring to a
few days ago, that didn't do it. Then I tried changing NIS09 to N360 3.0 and
that stopped me being able to send. In the end I restored to a point about 3
days before the problem, (reverting me to IE7 thankfully) removed Norton
altogether and then re-installed it from disk. Amazingly enough my Windows
Mail now seems to be working again. I now wonder whether it would have fixed
itself like yours in time, but I'm not going to experiment now I have it
working again! I think the problem was either related to IE8 installation,
or to NIS09 - more likely IE8 as it definitely worked on IE7 with NIS09
before.

(oh, also, it's a new PC with only a couple megabytes of email so definitely
not a capacity issue for me)

Thanks all for taking the time to contribute!

Beac

AFAICS you might better let NIS as well as N360 stay away from the
system.
NAV (the latest version 2009) might be OK if you disable e-mail
scanning.
But the rest of NIS is not only unneeded but a true trouble maker.

Not to be misunderstood: I do not belong to the Symantec haters. I've
been using Norton AV since it first appeared (back in the DOS days).
Although by the time I got many bangs over my poor head in the German MS
newsgroups for just mentioning the "stuff out if the yellow box" I think
that NAV 2009 is a fine product.
This said, at present I'm in close contact with Symantec's German
support because I cannot run the Vista SystemRestore other than in the
Safe Mode {siiiigh}.

Rainald
P.S. You may test things again without NIS and IE8 re-installed

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

The Winmail.dat attachment indicates a proprietary attachment format
sent from an Outlook user. For more on this issue see

Re: Windows mail not receiving attachments or displaying HTML mess

Norton Antivirus interference effects tend to be intermittent.
The next time you have this trouble I suggest uninstalling all Norton
security products and following up with their debris removal tool:
