Addendum to my post: I also went into 'my computer' etc. and deleted
everything out of my mail folders and that did not work either. Any further
suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

I have had this problem twice.
You have to delete them all one by one close windows mail reopen it
Then again delete them all one by one again
over and over
Every time you lose a few but not all.
It is a royal pain!

Yes, Windows Mail was shut down while I did the deletion.
