Possible to move mail data?

Where is the mail data stored? I assume somewhere on my C: drive. I would
like to move it to another drive like I could using Outlook. Anyone know how
to do this?

Re: Possible to move mail data?

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Advanced | Store Folder.

use the Browse button to set the new location. Make sure the directory
exists. Then close WinMail and reopen it and it will move the message store
location to the designated one.

I have tried doing this but Windows Mail does not remember the new store
folder. Nothing seems to happen and the next time I go in the store folder
is still set to the original C:\Users.... folder. Am I doing something
wrong?? Thanks.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

Does it indicate that it has moved the store or is moving it?

Check event viewer and ESENT errors and see if there are any related to
access denied. Also check the new destination folder and verify the
permissions on it and also check its contents and see if the messages were
moved.

The actual location is specified under the Windows Mail registry key as the
"Store Root" value, so you can check that.

If you have no access to the new store or WinMail can't find it, then it
will reset to the default, which is what appears to be happening.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

It doesn't give any messages. I have set-up C:\mailtest to which the system
has full control, and administrators, and me personally. When I click OK, it
says "your store location will not be changed until you shutdown windows
mail".

I shut it down and nothing happens. The C:\mailtest folder remains empty
and when I go back into mail the store folder still shows the default again.

I'm wondering if this is something to do with Macafee. It scans every
message when you first go into Windows mail. I've tried to turn this off but
it is still doing it.

I'm tempted to copy the folders manually and edit the registry key but this
is a bit risky and I don't want to mess up the whole thing.

Thanks for any more help!

Phil.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

Ooops, forgot to say, no ESENT errors in Event Viewer. Just some
informational ones about a backup and recovery procedure?

Re: Possible to move mail data?

You can try two things. Either attempting to completely disable McAfee or
uninstalling it completely. I would suggest just getting rid of it --
others are reporting problems.

To disable it to check, you can go to Start | Search and type msconfig and
then you need to turn off all startup items and also non-MS services and
then reboot. Then see if you can move it.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

Yes it was Macafee. I've uninstalled it and it has copied the message store
folder just fine. It was only a months trail that cam with the computer
anyway. I've put Norton on now and it works OK with that.

Cheers.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

Get rid of Norton also. Get something less invasive.

Re: Possible to move mail data?

And whatever anti-virus program you get, make sure you
configure it NOT to scan email.

Come to think of it, I have no idea if my OneCare scans email,
but there is no way to configure it.
