Go to 'Options' and click 'Spelling', altough it may show English for the language click it again as if to choose it, then click 'Okay', spell checker will then work. You will notice in the bottom panel Language 'English' click the down arrow on the right of 'English' and reselect 'English' and then click okay, your spell checker will then work.
