trouble with newsgroups

trying to set up my account with comcast newsgroups , I go to accounts and
follow all the procedures , I get to the point where it starts to download
the newsgroups and then it prompts me to sign in my name and password ,
after that it starts downloading newsgroups and then I get another prompt to
sign in again....anyone know what the problem is....the comcast account is
under my wifes name , but i have my own e-mail acount...would that matter ??

Re: trouble with newsgroups

Try going to Tools | Accounts | News | Properties | Server for the news
account and check the box that says it requires you to log on. Then use
your email credentials there and see if that fixes it.

Re: trouble with newsgroups

The username and password should be those of the primary account owner.

Re: trouble with newsgroups

Gary,

I understand that. The credentials I'm using are the same as those for my
primary e-mail account. One thing I forgot to mention was that when the
wizard kept asking me to enter credentials, it used "Username" and "Password"
in the un and pw boxes. You would think that it would prompt back with those
credentials stored in the account settings tab.

Any more ideas? Thanks

Re: trouble with newsgroups

There is some confusion because this thread was originally started
by "Bob" spiers@comcast.net, and I was commenting on his issue
where his wife was the primary account holder.

If the username and password are not being saved, it is possible
that the account is corrupt. So, delete ('remove') the news account.
Close WinMail, open again, and recreate the account.

Re: trouble with newsgroups

Sorry for the confusion Gary. When I started this , I thought my problem was
similar. Probably should have started a new thread. Anyway, did as you
suggested, started from scratch and the same thing happened.

I buit the account in the wizard and when I went to subscribe, I get a
Windows Security dialog asking me to verify the credentials to logon to the
news server. I enter my credentials and get the same security dialog over and
over. If I just hit OK without entering my credentials, I get a 480 error.

Re: trouble with newsgroups

Since you are sending from a Verizon account
(how are things in Baltimore, MD?), I assume the news server
in question is news.verizon.net, and your account setup should
look similar to this one:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/vz/7.2_Newsgroup

Notice that the account name is just the username part, unlike some
ISPs which require the complete email address user@ISP.com .

If you've done all of that correctly, I'm fresh out of ideas.

Re: trouble with newsgroups

Thanks for asking Gary. It's chilly and rainy this morning with a possibility
of snow. Yuck!

Anyway, I tried just using the name part of the email address and it worked.
Thanks much for your time and effort.
