    Vista Mail doesn't know it's on-line

Whenever I open Mail and go to newsgroups, Vista tells me it's not on-line.
It gives me the option to re-try or work off-line. If I click on re-try it
    connects and everything is fine.

Only Mail does this -- all my other internet-based programs (IE7, FireFox,
various software that checks for automatic updates, etc.) works just fine.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hello,

I would try using Windows Live Mail Desktop beta, and see if that helps
    solve your problem.

Thank you, but if I wanted a web-based mail service, I'd use one (and I
already have Gmail). Using Live Mail would not fix the problem with
Microsoft Mail. It would merely substitute one program for another, and for
a variety of reasons, it is a completely unsatisfactory solution.

Not a solution but just FYI, Windows Live Mail desktop is a client installed
program that allows for web based as well as POP3 and IMAP accounts
    (including GMail).

BYW: I don't think installing a beta will solve the problem.

I would check the connection tabs and ensure that it's not looking for
    another connection.
    Tools | Accounts | <news/mail account> | Properties | Connection tab and
make sure that it's not checked and looking for another connection.

Tools | Options | Connection tab | Change button and make sure Never Dial is
    selected.

    Are the usual culprits.

They're all set properly. Thanks, though.

Right now I can't think of anything else to tell you unless something is
taking you offline in maybe IE. That would cause WinMail to go offline as
    well.

Last night, I had to re-set the IP stack (problem caused by my laptop
going into "sleep" mode, but that's another issue altogether). The
    reset resolved the Mail issue.

I've had a number of stack-related issues with Vista which I never had
    with XP Pro.

    When is SP1 coming out?

It isn't even in beta testing yet.
