Vista - Zero size files in Windows Mail message store

I went into Windows Explorer to investigate the Windows Mail message store
and I saw zero size entries seemingly for every message I have ever sent or received
and then DELETED for both the mail and newsgroups.

Why, even though these messages have been deleted and the message store has been
compacted numerous times, are these zero byte files retained?

Might this have something to do with all the numerous Windows Mail problems?

I think you're looking at the Achilles Heel of the new file system.
It spawns lots of zero byte messages which eventually wind up
corrupting the database.

It seems to me that it would be an easy fix to just PERMANENTLY delete
all traces of messages that a user has deleted (why generate zero byte entries
anyway when messages are deleted?), either when the user deletes the message
or when the message store is compacted.

When I have to CONFIRM that I want items PERMANENTLY deleted, I
would think that they were actually COMPLETELY gone without any traces or residue.

Also, when you delete posts in newsgroup, they are REALLY gone, there are
no zero byte files left. If you delete all messages in a newsgroup all that is left
is a xxx.fol file -- NO zero byte files!

My WMUtil program (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) will remove all the zero byte
files in the message store. The only consequence of the files would appear
to be loss of performance due to their accumulation. The other issues some
are experiencing are unrelated to these files.

I'm not seeing any of the reported problems with Windows Mail when in use
for a few email accounts and newsgroups, though almost all of my important
mail and contact handling is done with Office. The only weird occurrence I
have is a slowness opening messages that is oddly remedied by opening and
closing the Windows calendar from within WM after WM is opened.


Zero Byte files may be a nuisance to many and can be deleted. To avoid the
time spent navigating to the folder to delete the '0' byte files Stephen
Cochran's utility works very well. It also compacts and can repair the WM
message store database. A nice tool to have for maintenance and extra
insurance.
