Transferring Windows Mail messages to new computer with windows ma

Both computers have Windows Vista. I transferred other files but I didn't see
a location to transfer the mail messages using Windows Easy Transfer. Does
anyone have any suggestions? I would like to transfer inbox, outbox, and
sent items.
Thank you,
dukey

1) Create a folder in Explorer and name it C:\Old Mail

2) Copy ALL the dbx fles from OE6 to the C:\Old Mail folder on the Vista
machine. Be sure to include the Folders.dbx file, it is
required...................

3) File | Import | Messages
4) Select Microsoft Outlook Express 6
5) Press NEXT
6) Import mail from an OE6 store directory should be selected.
7) Press OK
8) Press BROWSE

Now, when you press the Browse button, Explorer will open.
There are three window panes. The two on the left are the ones we are
interested in and then only the one named FOLDERS is one we want to look
thru, it's the one with the scrollbar.

At the top next to the forward and back buttons (two round buttons with
arrows) you should see an icon then your username and next to each of those
is a small triangle.

On the triangle to the right of the icon, click on it and select Computer
Now, you should see the hard drive and the CD drives. double click on the C
drive icon. Probably named Local Disk (C

****
Now, in the right windows pane, you should see the Old Mail folder you
created and put the dbx files.
Double click on it to open it.

Ok, in the left windows pane, there should be some light highlighting for
the Old Mail folder to show it as selected.

At the bottom there is a line named Folder and probably shows Old Mail
listed there.

Delete the text Old Mail from the Folder line and then press the Select
Folder button on the bottonmright. Yes it should be empty.

When you select the Select Folder button, you are taken back to the browse
location and it should read C:\Old Mail

If it reads C:\Old Mail\Old Mail, go back and repeat the steps on the folder
select (just below the **** above.

If it does read C:\Old Mail then you are ready to finish the import.
Press NEXT and finish the import.

Copy the Local Files folder under the Windows Mail folder to the Documents
folder on the other computer. Make sure the files are not Read Only. Use
Windows Mail's File | Import.

Re: Transferring Windows Mail messages to new computer with windows ma

Hi, Dukey.

You say BOTH computers are running Vista. Then it should be a fairly simple
transfer operation, almost a standard Copy. The only question is the media
you will use to move the files: floppy? CD-RW? USB thumb drive? Or even
a direct-connect cable that will let you copy the files directly from one
computer to the other?

Since you are using Windows Easy Transfer, perhaps all you need is the
destination folder name. To find that on each computer, start Windows Mail.
Then click Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder, to see
where your messages are stored in the old computer, and where WM will expect
to see them in the new computer.

If you plan to use transfer media, such as a USB thumb drive, then exit WM
on the new computer after noting the full path to the folder. Then, in the
old computer's WM, click File | Export | Messages; in the next screen,
select Microsoft Windows Mail and click Next. Then Browse to the folder you
will use to make the transfer. Insert the thumb drive in the new computer
and Import the messages, using the WM 7 format, and browsing to the folder
on your transfer media.

The main difference between OE6 and WM is the database format. OE6 stored
all the messages in a few .dbx files, including the crucial Folders.dbx
file. WM stores each message in its own .eml file and uses some "overhead"
structure files to keep track of them. Since you are transferring from WM
to WM, a simple Copy from the old computer to the new Store Folder MIGHT
work. But I think you should use the Export and Import steps, to let the
new WM build its structure and organize the imported messages.

Do you really want to transfer the Outbox? This really should be empty,
shouldn't it? And WM on the new computer will have already created an
Outbox for new outgoing messages.

See www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm My OEX program (www.oehelp.com/OEX/)
makes it very easy as well. You just point at a folder across a network to
import it.
