Vista Tutorial - Windows Mail stops working and then restarts

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help or if they are experiencing similar
problems.

This problem seems to have appeared after I did an easy transfer of
files and folders from an old XP PC to a new one with vista.

When I open up Windows mail it does not check email but automatically
comes up with an error message.

When I close a mail it comes up with a window saying "Windows Mail has
stopped working. Windows checking for a solution to the problem."
Then a new box comes up saying Windows Mail is restarting.

Once mail loads again it does try and load messages but does not seem
happy. When you close mail again it comes up with the same error
messages as above.

This time when it reloads it seems to work fine. When you close mail
again it still comes up with the same error message but then says
"Windows Mail has stopped working. A problem caused the program to
stop working corectly. Windows will close the program and notify you
if a soultion is available. Close program box.

I hope someone can help. I am currently running MacAfee could this be
effecting mail.

Try disabling McAffee completely or even uninstall it and reboot and see if
the problem is resolved. If not, you can try using Steve Cochran's WMUtil
program and try to repair the database:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx (note the caveat about making a
copy of the database before doing a repair for insurance).

If both fail, you can copy the old DBX files (from the XP Outlook Express
Store Folder) to a new folder on the Vista machine, make sure the Read-Only
attribute on each DBX file is cleared (it is set if you use a CD/DVD to copy
them over) and try an import in Windows Mail (File/Import/Messages). And
before doing the import make sure you clear the existing files in the
message store folder in Vista.

This has nothing to do with email, but I have gotten the same type of message
with other programs which might indicate a Vista issue.

My Dell computer is about 1.5 months old with Windows Vista. Corel Snapfire
Plus is a picture editing program that came installed on the computer. When I
would open a picture JPEG file, Corel is the software that would
automatically come up, displaying the picture. If I closed the Corel
software, I would get an error message that was similar to yours, saying that
the program has stopped working. The irritating part about it was that I
could not open another picture file until I closed the error message which
was flashing on the bottom. I set Windows Photo Gallery as the default
picture program which also came installed on the computer. I no longer have
that problem.

It appears that the Vista operating system could not differentiate between
me closing the Corel program versus the program unexpectedly stopping
working. It sounds like it is a similar issue with your email program. I have
not had that specific issue with Windows Mail myself. I have had a couple of
other email problems which seem common with Windows Mail. I hope this gives
you a little more info regarding your problem.
