How do you compact folders in Windows Mail?

Can anyone tell me how to compact folders in Windows Mail? I can't find the
option to this manually, as I could in Outlook Express. I'm finding the
program to be quite sluggish. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the manual option was removed. Can't imagine why. To work
around it, reset Compact Database on ever ### runs to 1 (in Tools / Advanced
/ Maintenance). Exit W Mail, restart and exit again and it will compact.
Then reset ### back to the default 100 or your other preference.

Rebecca,

Go to

www.oehelp.com/wmutil

and download Steve Cochran's utility. Then run the utility (after unzipping
the file) to compact your e-mail.

I hope this helps.

Because it doesn't mean the same thing in Windows Mail. The actual folder
for Windows Mail are Windows Folders with a separate EML file for each
message instead of the terrible DBX files that OE used.

Re: How do you compact folders in Windows Mail?

I have discovered that every few days a box pops up in WM asking if I want
the database compacted. I click and it's done. Is that what you asked? Wayne.

Re: How do you compact folders in Windows Mail?

That's an interesting utility. Unfortunately, I found that running it
significantly increased the storage being used by WM. I use Windows Mail as
a news reader only, and maybe it would be different for the mail store
alone.

Re: How do you compact folders in Windows Mail?

The repair function creates a backup copy of the database file. Once its
finished and things are working okay, you can delete the backup. That's
what is increasing the size.
