| | Outlook Express for Vista? I just received this month's security updates from Microsoft. One of them was called "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows Vista (KB929123)" What does Microsoft know that we don't? -- Gary VanderMolen |

I haven't had it and there no record in the knowledge base or any other searchable part of M$ web site. |

| | Re: Outlook Express for Vista? Yeah, I just installed the updates, and noticed that one. I figured it was meant for Win Mail.... This critical security update resolves two privately reported and two publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. One of these vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user viewed a specially crafted e-mail using Windows Mail in Windows Vista. The other vulnerabilities could allow information disclosure if a user visits a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer and cannot be exploited directly in Outlook Express. For the information disclosure vulnerabilities, users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-jun.mspx "Gary VanderMolen" <gary@NoMail.invalid> wrote in message news:#mtPCqSrHHA.4548@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >I just received this month's security updates from Microsoft. > One of them was called "Cumulative Security Update for > Outlook Express for Windows Vista (KB929123)" > > What does Microsoft know that we don't? > -- > Gary VanderMolen > > > |

I spotted that one too ;-) I think a lot of people would be happy if OE were to be made Vista compatible. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFGbwTSqDp2fu862vwRAi9cAJ4jG+k3CKK+m5ruNT1Qct9RpgBUVACeMtxL N0SsOLIh4g9knRNYfuqamuc= =Duk9 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I was going to write a message about this too, but you beat me to it. I hid my OE update by right-clicking it and selected HIDE. It worked. BUT, here's the thing. I like Windows, and even Vista (when it actually allows me to open the Control Panel) and I've used Windows from the start. However, I'm starting to believe the Mac people and the Linux folks. This Outlook Express update for Vista is an example of confusion and lack of explanation. No doubt there will be Microsoft MVPs (who are great) who will rationalize the need for the OE update, just as they rationalized the Outlook 2003 junk mail filter update for me when I don't even have Outlook 2003 installed. In other words, I think Microsoft customers are constantly in a state of "What The Hell Is This???" mode, and we never get clear consistent answers. OK, enough. I'll get slammed for this. But I still think that MS needs to think in "real world" terms instead of their cryptic, computer-slang, and confusing error messages and inconsistent explanations. EW |

It appears to be just a misnomer by whoever titled that update. When you go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929123 it clearly indicates that the update applies to both Outlook Express when used with XP, and Windows Mail when used with Vista. -- Gary VanderMolen |

Yes I figured that out, I seriously doubt MS would ever make OE Vista compatible. Not with WM being its "upgrade" & WLM round the corner. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFGb8P6qDp2fu862vwRAsFiAJ0Y+r6JxrGI1HXh8rf54tR4cIlr7wCfbXzB Od68UfYy8eIuDBR5xeAZIRc= =Ipm2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |
