| | Window Mail and this Newsgroup I can set it to download up to a 1000 messages however I can't find a way to download more than a 1000 so that I can see previous messages to that 1000. I know they delete on the server however there are usually way more than a 1000. Using Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail. Was not a problem with OE in 98SE-XP. |

| | Re: Window Mail and this Newsgroup Hi, Spirit. It's one of those things that we often overlook because it is so simple. ;^} Just UNcheck the box that says to "Get ___ headers at a time". But be prepared for a looong wait on a busy newsgroup, such as Vista.Mail, which has over 15,000 available today - or Vista.General, which is showing over 50,000 available! Even with broadband, it can take several minutes to get them all. That setting is not available for on a per-NG basis; it works for ALL your subscribed NGs. You can partially control the download time by changing the Synchronization settings for each NG to Headers only or New messages only, rather than All messages. But the first synchronization after changing your Get ___ headers setting might surprise you. RC -- R. C. | | Re: Window Mail and this Newsgroup Hi, George. Your problem is not the same as we are discussing in this thread. Please post a new message to start a new thread. You might use a descriptive Subject such as "Lost 8,000 Emails". (Chances are, from your description, they are not lost permanently, but just misplaced and can be recovered.) Windows Mail (and Windows Live Mail and their predecessor, Outlook Express) handle both Email and Newsgroups, but manage them somewhat differently. We are discussing newsgroup messages in this thread. You are asking about Email messages. Emails are generally addressed TO you; newsgroup messages are like postings on a bulletin board, which can be read by anybody in the world, not just by the addressee. Emails are in the Inbox folder and can be - and SHOULD BE - moved to other folders for permanent (or semi-permanent) retention and archival, if desired. Newsgroup messages don't go to the Inbox; they are downloaded into a folder for each subscribed newsgroup and are automatically deleted from our hard drives after some period of time (see Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance tab). Lost newsgroup posts can simply be downloaded again, so long as they are on the news server. Email messages are typically deleted from the server as soon as they are downloaded, so lost messages might not be available any longer, especially if they were sent more than a few days ago. When you post your new question, please make it clear whether you are talking about email or news messages, so that responders can make intelligent suggestions for recovery of your lost messages.
