Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

When I click on a link, on a craigslist.org page, the resulting email is
returned.
My old XP Pro email worked fine, my Yahoo email client works fine, it's
only the new Vista "Windows Mail" Version 6 that has the problem. I'm sure
that
there are settings that I can make in my Vista Home Premium of the Microsoft
Mail - I just have not been able to find them yet. I turned off the firewall
and
defender - but that did not help.

HELP

Here's a sample of the returned email:

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

Hmmmm - wonder if my ISP (Wildblue.net) needs to
set a switch or whatever ... ?

I asked Wildblue tech support about:
"Please setup matching DNS and rDNS records"
but they did not understand what I was talking about -
and I did not know enough ~ it to protest.

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

After a little more exploring, I have a gut feeling that if I set
the options in Vista Windows Mail ( Tools, Options, Security,...)
correctly, my problem would go away ... but I'm too ignorant
to figure it out.

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

You need to explain step by step what happens in the gap between
"When I click on a link, on a craigslist.org page" and
"the resulting email is returned."

Just how is the email sent, by which program or service?
How is it returned?
Is there an error message?

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

Sorry, I didn't read down far enough the first time around.
Thanks for including the complete rejection message.
Doesn't look like a Windows Mail problem.
There is some kind of weird incompatibility between craigslist and
mail.wildblue.net. I did some snooping around but can't find the
reason for the incompatibility.

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

Found this.

Guess I need to pester my ISP to change my return DNS -
to something, not sure what ?

Gene

----------- cut N paste -------------

No, unfortunately not - it's the remote mail servers' configuration
that's strict - AOL in particular do this.
It's happening because, during a mail exchange "hand-shake":

1. Your mail server tells the remote mail server that it's
server1.mydomain.com
2. The remote mail server does a forward-lookup of server1.mydomain.com
- and gets IP address 123.123.123.1
3. The remote mail server then does a reverse-lookup of
1.123.123.123.in-addr.arpa and expects to get server1.mydomain.com, but
instead gets server-123-123-123-1.isp.com
4. Depending on the configuration of the remote mail server, it either
accepts this mail with a warning (as most do) or reject it completely
(like this rare one you're getting)

It's a check mainly for the correctness of DNS setups, but also some
spammers who use fake hostnames cannot set reverse DNS, so it can filter
out a few spammers, but most of these are on dial-up/dynamic ADSL, and
because ISPs own the IP addresses, they set their reverse DNSs
correctly. Also in some cases the difference between DNS/rDNS can be
legitimate, so it's really down to the requirements of the accepting
mail server.

Personally on my mail servers I apply a header to the e-mail, warning of
the difference, which is then used as part of a bigger calculation to
see the probability of it being spam. I certainly wouldn't reject
e-mail based on this alone.

All you can do is pester your ISP to change your reverse DNS. Once
they've changed it, the usual rules of allowing 24-48 hours for
propogation apply too.

Andy.

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

What Andy said is essentially what I said, except in much greater detail.
I highly doubt you could get your ISP to change your reverse DNS. And,
it is probably not *your* reverse DNS that is the problem but the
reverse DNS of mail.wildblue.net.

The remote mail server is being entirely too picky. My guess is that you
will encounter this issue on only a very small percentage of mail you send.
What I would do is get an alternate SMTP server for that occasion.
It never hurts to have some redundancy. Get a free Gmail account, and
configure it for POP access. Then, when you run across the reverse DNS
issue, resend using the Gmail SMTP server.

Re: Unable to send email to craigslist.org ?

THANKS, Gary.

It's no problem getting another email account.
I have a test Yahoo one, and have no problems
sending an email to Craig's - seems Craig's likes
Yahoo, but not Vista Windows Mail client.

Is there any way to send a Yahoo or Gmail email,
then have the users reply go to my Vista Windows Mail
client, without the user knowing that their reply is being sent
to a different email address than the one from which it was sent?
(LOL - hope that sentence made sense:-)

I do not want the person sending me a reply to have to
do anything manually to redirect the reply email to my Vista
Windows Mail client.

I really do not mind having to SEND a few email from a Yahoo
or Gmail account, but I really hate to have to monitor these
email accounts for new email - I seem to forget to check them :-)

THANKS,
Gene
