Cannot make Outlook the default program for MAILTO protocol

I want to set Outlook 2003 as my default email program when I click on a
MAILTO link in internet explorer. Instead, it defaults to MS Mail. With XP it
was very easy to set the default programs for various functions. Now when I
try to set the default program, I can't change it from MS Mail to Outlook. I
got to:

Tools
>Internet Options
>>Programs tab
>>>Set Programs

I then get options to:
-"Set your default programs"
But I can't find a way to set Outlook as my mail program
or this:
-"Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
Then I find the MAILTO protocol, and select "change program" but MS Mail is
my only option. I want the MAILTO protocol to open up Outlook 2003, not MS
Mail.

Thanks for any help

Yes it was installed when I installed Office 2003.

As stated I have tried the Default Programs route but Outlook is NOT listed
as an option, only Windows Mail is shown.

Sounds like you need to be dealing with the Outlook experts who hang out
in the Outlook newsgroups.

Re: Cannot make Outlook the default program for MAILTO protocol

You might try starting Outlook with the /checkclient command line switch:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...031101033.aspx
Command-line switches

/checkclient - Prompts for the default manager of e-mail, news, and
contacts.

Re: Cannot make Outlook the default program for MAILTO protocol

Thanks Hal, still no joy. You can see the problem from this screenshot.

The mailto protocol is tied to Windows Mail, no oulook.

Re: Cannot make Outlook the default program for MAILTO protocol

Did you take this to the Outlook newsgroup as I advised you to?

You chose "Associate a file type ...".
Try above it, "Set your default programs".
