When I open my mail and there are pictures that are in my mail it comes up
with a box and an X in it. Why is that and can it be fixed.

I need to see them and be able to forward them and/or copy to my word
program.

Lots of possible reasons, the most common being

1. Tools | Options | Security | Block images and other external content

2. The sender did not actually sent the picture.
