Vista - Can not empty from deleted files in mail

Can someone please help, I can not empty the deleted items in my mail box

tools--option--advanced--maintenance(button)--empty messages from the
'deleted items' folder on exit(check)

Unfortunately, this is persistent bug that exists in Windows Mail.
You can fix it by upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

WMUtil only clears items stuck in the Outbox.
It won't help with the OP's problem.

If you use Norton or McAfee antivirus, unintall it, download and run the
'Uninstaller' from the website, then download and install either AVG or
Avast.

Norton and McAfee run on Vista but are not fully compatible with Windows
Mail.

You can get rid of the stuck messages, but it takes time and patience. You
can use either the 'Edit' list or right-click on the Deleted Items folder,
but you need to repeatedly "Empty" the folder. It will get rid of at least
one message at a time, but it will work.

After doing all of this, I have not had any other problems.
