Vista - Unable to access folders

I'm in the process of transferring from Outlook Express on an XP machine to a
new machine running Windows mail under Vista Ultimate.
I imported all of the folders from my old e-mail and they ended up in
"Imported Folders" in WM. I dragged most of the folders to where I wanted (ie
directly under Local Folders) and moved the messages for folders that already
existed (such as Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts). There are probably tens of
thousands of old messages across 50 or so folders.

Now I can't aaccess any folders at all including Inbox nor can I create new
folders. If I select any folder the lower right pane says
"Folder could not be displayed
Windows Mail could not open this folder
Possible causes are:
Low disk space
Low memory"

Now that's fairly ridiculous because this is a system with 3Gb of memory
(according to the gadget at least 60% free) and there several hundred spare
GB on the disks at the moment.

The messages are there because if you check the properties of any folder the
message count is correct. Also all of the eml files are on the disk (but the
imported folders on disk are still under ...\Local Folders\Imported Folder\
rather than directly under ...\Local Folders where I expected them to be
after dragging the folders.

If I try to create a new folder then after entering a name and clicking
okay, I get a useless message saying couldn't create a folder but no
explanation of why.

I have to say Windows Mail seems to be a disaster compared to Outlook Express.

Chances are, you are running an incompatible antivirus, such as
McAfee or Norton. Uninstall it, then download and install the free
version of Avast:

That error message is left over from OE and is one of its dumbest. Its the
default message when OE fails and it carries over to WinMail. In addition
to what Gary posted, try running my WMUTil (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) program
and compact and repair the database. See if that fixes it. If not, it
sounds as if you'll have to reset everything.

Thanks heaps Steve & Gary.

As Gary suggested, simply turning off McAfee AV cleared up the really weird
problems (as well as not being able to access folders, sometimes they would
be there and sometimes just all disappear from WM). So I take back my
denigration of WM - I really like being able to seacrh all 18,000 stored
messages across all folders instantly with LiveSearch. I was on the verge of
switching back to XP in frustration yesterday.

I'll check out your WMUtil anyway, sounds like it may be a handy tool in
case of future problems.

I'm very disappointed with McAfee (& it sounds like Norton too) that they
haven't done a better job months after Vista's launch.

Thanks for reporting back.
People find it hard to believe that well-known software like
McAfee and Norton antivirus programs are incompatible with
Windows Mail, so it really helps when we get a confirmation back
that, yes, this is really the case.
