Missing folders after reinstall

I was having problems with my video driver so Dell had me to reinstall my
OS. I noticed my subfolders in Win Mail are all missing along with the email
messages that were in them.
Is there a way to retrieve those?

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

Are you running an antivirus that is not compatible with Windows Mail?
Both Norton and McAfee antivirus are incompatible and those would
need to be uninstalled. Replace with a compatible antivirus
like the free version of Avast:

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

So will this help me retrieve my messages? I am running McAfee but I'd like
to know if I can retrieve all of those messages and their corresponding
subfolders.
Thank you for your post though. I have had probs with McAfee & its latest
update.

Hi,

It depends on how you reinstalled the OS. If you did a clean install, then I'm sorry they are gone. If you did a upgrade type install, you might check for a hidden "C:\windows.old" file. You will need to make sure that your have "Show hidden files and folders" dotted and uncheck "Hide Protected OS system files" in Folder Options. If it is there, then navigate to "C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders" within that folder. Your messages may still be in there. Use the "To Reset Windows Mail" section as a guide on how to transfer them back into Windows Mail.

Windows Mail problems

Hope it is still there for you,
Shawn

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

There are no guarantees. All we know is that some people have posted
here that missing folders reappeared after McAfee or Norton was uninstalled.
You have nothing to lose by uninstalling McAfee.

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

Oh man. My messages and folders are gone! I was unable to back anything up
because I was only able to get on via Safe Mode and of course, you can't run
a backup in Safe Mode. I was able to save just about all of my files other
ways though but my mail is GONE! Dang McAfee!

On a more positive note, I did uninstall McAfee & downloaded Avast. I feel
better already....except for the loss of my email.

Thank you all for the help.

I'm sorry to hear that. You can use the Import and Export Messages options under "File" menu in Windows Mail to make it easy to backup and restore messages.

Glad to hear you are back up and running though.

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

As Shawn suggested, did you look in the "C:\windows.old" folder?

Re: Missing folders after reinstall

Search for *.eml as Administrator and see if perhaps you can find some of
them.

See here to backup in the future: www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm
