550 not local host abcdef.com, not a gateway

Hello,

I have a new computer running Vista, whenever I send an emial using Windows
Mail I get "550 not local host #$%%^.com, not a gateway" error from McAffee.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Re: 550 not local host abcdef.com, not a gateway

McAfee is the first problem.
Both McAfee and Norton Antivirus are incompatible with Windows
Mail, and they would need to be uninstalled. Replace with a
compatible antivirus like the free version of Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

After you do the above, if you still get a similar error message,
let me know if
a) you are using a laptop away from home, or
b) you are sending from home but using an SMTP server
other than the one supplied by your ISP.

Re: 550 not local host abcdef.com, not a gateway

Gary,

I have installed Avast on my home desk top and unistalled McAffee and I am
still having the problem using MS Mail and Outlook. The MS Mail error
message is:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'candXXXXkites@yahoo.com'. Subject 'Re:
test', Account: 'mail.candXXXXkites.com', Server: 'mail.candXXXXkites.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 not local host yahoo.com, not a
gateway', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number:
0x800CCC79

My email goes through my websites server and not comcast.

any ideas?

thanks

'mail.candXXXXkites.com' is not a valid server name.

And you have set up for SMTP rather than webmail procssing.

Re: 550 not local host abcdef.com, not a gateway

This problem falls under what I mentioned as
"b) you are sending from home but using an SMTP server
other than the one supplied by your ISP".

Your ISP, Comcast, will not let you use a port 25 SMTP server
other than the one supplied by Comcast.

The workaround is as follows:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select the mail.candXXXXkites.com account,
Properties, Servers. For the outgoing (SMTP) server change the
name from mail.candXXXXkites.com to smtp.comcast.net.
Do not change anything else. Try sending.
Your correspondents will not notice that you are using a
different SMTP server.

Thanks, changing the outgoing server worked, not sure why, but it works.

Thanks for the feedback.
It's a bit complicated unless you work with this stuff day in
and day out, like I do.
