Vista - Windows Mail Downloads ENTIRE SERVER Every Time. Sigh...

So I've set everything up exactly as I'm supposed to in Windows Mail. Click
Send and Receive, and then WM proceeds to download the 6,000+ emails
currently on my "sbcglobal.net" server. So far so good. [This is what i would
expect from any client.]

Once it's done, however, and I check mail again, it proceeds to download the
already-downloaded 6,000+ emails.... UNLIKE any other email client I've EVER
used, that is usually setup to know what it has already yanked from the
server, and ONLY downloads "new" emails subsequent to that.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I hope I wasn't unclear... but if someone
has some advice, good lord I will be insanely grateful. My other computer is
a PowerMac [tower] with the simple Mail client it comes with.

with two systems, two email clients, and keeping everything in "normal sync."

Hi Arclight,

Check this setting in Windows Mail:
1. Click Tools.
2. Click Accounts.
3. Select your account and click Properties.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Uncheck "Leave a copy of message on server"
6. Click Ok.

That should do it for you.

I don't think anybody here has had your experience of downloading
6000+ emails! By default, WM deletes emails from the server, once it
finishes downloading. The possibility exists that the download did not
finish.

I assume you can access your sbcglobal.net server via webmail?
If so, move most, if not all, of those 6000 emails into some folder
other than the webmail inbox. POP clients like Windows Mail will
only download what's in the server's inbox folder.

You are pushing the ISP server to the LIMIT !!!

Make your own backup's of your mail locally, leaving all on the server, for
ever, as you are doing is absolutely ridiculous.

Follow the advice from brink, 'or' at least!! In the same locale that he
sends you to, set a number of days to store the mail prior to deleting. 21
days should suffice for any one?

Next thing your account will be closed be sure.

If you make changes to the account password or certain logon settings within
the MS email program it will down load everything as if it were logging on
the first time. That's the same for all MS email programs I've used
(Outlook, Outlook Express, Vista Mail). I too like to leave a copy of my
emails on the server as backup.
