Vista - How do I backup and restore my mail and contacts in Windows Mail?

I'm going to restore my laptop back to the way it was out of the box so I
need to backup my contacts and mail in Windows Mail before I do this, so that
I can restore them when the laptop resinstallation is complete. How do I do
this?

Hi Bob,

To backup your Contacts, just save them to external media like you would any other file. They are located here: "C:\Users\(your username)\Contacts". Just copy them back to restore.

To backup your email messages in Windows Mail, click File and use the Export/Import Messages feature to save and restore them. Take a look at the "To Reset Windows Mail" section at this link for a guide on how to use Export and Import. Import is done the same as export.

Windows Mail problems

First of all you need to goto Organize/Folder and Search Options then click
on
View and uncheck the box
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
This allows you to see the AppData Folder

Go to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail
UserName is you as a user

and backup the Windows Mail Folder

After installing Vista again just copy the Windows Mail folder folder to the
above location.

If you are using the backup that comes with Vista all this will be taken
care of.
