| Guest | Cannot find winmail.exe on computer I used Windows Mail on my new computer for 3 days and then decided I preferred Thunderbird for my e-mail. I set up Thunderbird to be the default e-mail program. Later I had a problem with Thunderbird and decided to change back to Windows Mail. However, when I attempted to locate the winmail.exe file I could not. I have my search preferences set to search system and hidden files as well as other files. I can click on a mailbox, however, and winmail starts. I would prefer to go in the "front" door with a winmail icon on the desktop and not enter by way of a mail box. I could not find a download on the microsoft.com site for windows mail. Can anyone help me locate the file on my computer or a download? Many thanks. |

On my PC it's in Program Files > Windows Mail Program files is by default excluded from the Search index. I'm not sure that adding too much stuff to Searchindex is wise because it is quite a performance over head. Consider using Locate32 in conjunction with a default setup of Searchindex. It is very complimentary and useful for those occasions... ie. searching Program Files, that are outside the deafault index. http://locate32.webhop.org/ |

| Guest | Re: Cannot find winmail.exe on computer I appreciate your reply, Julian. Unfortunately, I cannot find winmail.exe in the Windows Mail folder under Program files nor anywhere else I would have expected it to be (I had previously been able to find it there). Another Microsoft mystery, I imagine. I haven't quite grasped the searchindex nuances, but I know to try to restrict to "likely" candidates. Again, thanks for the response. If you think of anything else, please let me know. | Guest | Re: Cannot find winmail.exe on computer Windows Mail is part of Vista and by default is located at "C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe". You could create a new shortcut on the desktop with this as the properties. The quotation marks are required. Select your mail icon from the list under 'change icon'. Hope this helps. It will verify and repair system files. Hopefully it will let you see it in Program Files again. Here's a link for how to use it. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66...tem-files.html Shawn |

| Guest | Re: Cannot find winmail.exe on computer Julian, I downloaded locate32 and it did not find the file either. It's got to be there, of course, for me to be able to use it. Further, I could not get locate32 to find a file I knew was there. Probably need to use a different setting than I did. Thanks, again. magic "Julian" wrote: > "magic" <magic@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote > > >I appreciate your reply, Julian. | Guest | Re: Cannot find winmail.exe on computer I rechecked my default settings and found that "show system files" was not checked. Once I checked that, I found the file. (FYI, I did uncheck same after I found it). Also locate32 did find it when I determined that I needed to save the search and then view it. Thanks to all. magic "brink" wrote: > > magic;426064 Wrote: > > This works. Still cannot understand why I cannot see it in a file > > listing > > under Program Files. Thanks to all. magic Strange, "winmail.exe" should not be considered a "Hidden" file. You might check the properties to see if the "Hidden" box is unchecked. Take a look here for more details on this. Hidden Files and Folders Shawn |
