Vista - Speller in Windows Mail

Hi. I have set up the spell check in windows mail in Vista for English but I
see it must be US English as it doesn't recognise the word 'Colour'. So I
want to set it up with UK English but I cannot see that setting is there
something I have to download or get from Windows update?

Hi Andy,

For now, Windows Mail does not support any other version of English other than the US English. The only workaround that may help you is to add the words you want to be checked for into the custom dictionary in Spell Check. You can see how to add them at this link.

Hi Andy,

This was discussed pretty extensively, a few months back. The guts of the
answer is that the English language version of Vista is en-US only - ie,
based on American English. There is no en-UK version of Vista, and none is
planned. Managers in Windows Division apparently considered developing an
en-UK MUI/LIP for Vista, but decided it wasn't worth the effort (I'm trying
not to sound bitter here, but it's hard). So, American spellings are
standard in all Windows-supplied components.

For UI components which display static text, there is no workaround - so we
have "Personalize", "Network and Sharing Center" , "Sync Center", etc. For
the Mail spelling checker, there is a semi-reasonable solution. When the
checker sees an UK English word it doesn't recognise, just press the Add
button to add the word to the dictionary. After you've added 20 or 30 main
words, most of the main day-to-day UK spelling issues are resolved. There's
no way I can find to *remove* words from the built-in dictionary - so you
can add "colour" but there's no way to remove "color".

The other workaround is to use 3rd party email apps like Eudora or
Thunderbird, which can be configured to use normal ... um, I mean, en-UK ...
spellings. Microsoft has crunched the numbers, and determined there is no
financial advantage in respecting the cultural traditions of the
English-speaking world.

Hi Andy,

I believe I have seen in this NG previously that there is no UK English
Dictionary. You will just have to ADD to your personal Dictionary.

You can also open this dictionary as a Notepad file and edit the contents
yourself.

You will find it at C:\Users\Your
Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail\UserDictionary.

You will have to enable "Show Hidden files & folders" from Start Orb/Control
Panel/Folder Options/View to find it, but if you make a shortcut to it, you
will find it after you "Do not show ...." (default setting)

Thank you that has been very helpful. I must say I never noticed the sharing
Center and Sync Center being spelt like that until you brought it up. Now I
see it though.

I shall do what you say and just add the UK spellings to the directory next
time.
