Inbox Prob in Windows Message Store

I was looking at the Inbox in my Windows Message Store
(User/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail/Local Folders/Inbox), and I noticed that
there are 7 messages listed there of 0 KB each, dated from 4/25 to 8/13. In
Windows Mail, I keep my Inbox empy, and yes, when I open Windows Mail, my
Inbox is indeed empty.

What are these 7 messages? Should I keep them? Is it okay to delete them?
Are they shadow emails of emails I've moved to one the personal folders I've
created under the Local Folders heading? Please help.

Re: Inbox Prob in Windows Message Store

Yes, Windows Mail does that, and yes they are safe to delete. There is a free
nifty little utility (WMutil) that will remove them for you after you have
closed Windows Mail.

Hi BearySarah,

Read the First section at this site, and try the KB941090 Update to see if it will fix it for you.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62...-problems.html (Windows Mail problems)

If they are .eml files, then you can simply click on them to see what they are. You can even change the file extension to .txt to be able to read them in notepad if you wanted. They will be safe to delete. Do not delete the "winmail.fol" file. You can use the "To Reset Windows Mail" section at the above link as reference if you need it.

Re: Inbox Prob in Windows Message Store

When I open each email, it says, "Sender Unspecified", Subject "None", and
the message area is a big blank white box.

What I don't understand is, where did these emails come from? As I said
before, I keep my Inbox empty. After I hit send/receive, the emails I want
to save are moved into separate folders. The emails I want to delete, I
highlight and hit shift/delete. When I open Windows Mail, my Inbox is
empty, and when I close Windows Mail, my Inbox is empty.

I get about 150 emails each day. What is different about these five, that
range in date from 4/25 to 8/13, that they are in my Inbox in the message
store, but they don't appear in my Inbox when I open Windows Mail? I will
really appreciate any info anyone can provide.

BearySarah,

It is hard to say for sure. Windows Mail message store is very sensitive. Those messages could of been corrupted by something like the antivirus program email scanning (which should be off), or if while the message store was being compacted, it was interrupted.

You may want to store emails you are going to keep for a while in a separate folder in your personal user folders by using Export. You can then Import them when you want them back. This reduces the chance of them being corrupted in the message store.

You might also consider switching to Windows Live Mail Beta (WLM). It supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.)

For US and UK:
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

For non-US and non-UK locations (direct download): http://g.live.com/1rebeta/WLM_en-us

Re: Inbox Prob in Windows Message Store

Hi Shawn. Thank you for your suggestions. They are great ideas. WLM has
interested me for a while. It just scares me because it's still in beta, and
people have been having goofy problems with it, too. Also, when I first got
this machine, which came with Vista, I read that folks were having trouble
with compacting, so I have never used the feature.

On 8/27 I used the McAfee removal tool (plus, I cleared McAfee from my
registry too!), to completely get McAfee off of my machine. I switched to
Kaspersky Virus 7.0, which allows you to turn off all email anything. It
will be interesting to see if any of this weirdness continues after the
switch.

Until then, I will continue backing up my Windows Mail every night, just in
case. Typically, I back up about 1950 items. I have email going back to
1998. And, I use a lot of it regularly. This has served me well and has
saved me from several mini disasters. Plus, it’s a great way of updating my
Windows Mail on my laptop (which also came with Vista)!

Here a scary thing. For all of the things I have read that are to be
included in Vista SP1, there has not been one mention about anything having
to do with Windows Mail!!! LOL

Thank you again, Sheryl

Your welcome Sheryl,

It was rumored that MS might replace WM with WLM in the SP1, but with the recent KB941090 Update for WM who knows. (LOL)

Have a great day,

I hope the list of what all will be included in SP1 hasn't been finalized yet.
MS is just now beginning to recruit beta testers for SP1. Unfortunately,
once the beta test starts, I'll be under a non-disclosure agreement, so I
can't reveal what all is in it. :-(
