Windows Security Log in Message

I have been using vista windows mail for the last 5 months, suddenly I can
receive but not send. One minute I was able to send messages, 15mins later I
was not able too. I am using my school server which is
student.mail.uoguelph.com......all my settings are correct. I am using Avast
antivirus software. When I try to send I get a Windows Security window that
says:

Logon to Student.mail.uoguelph.ca
Please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail
server.

I fill this part out with my username and password and the screen pops up
again and again.

I have deleted my account and created a new one...does not help, turned off
antivirus etc.

Could this be a problem on my server side from school or this a problem with
Vista.

Thanks Candice

RE: Windows Security Log in Message

I am experiencing a very similar problem. It just started today. I have
been using Vista mail for about 2 months now. It was working fine.

One minute I could send and receive and now I can do neither. It keeps
giving me the security window telling me to log in with my user name and
password.

I enter it and the screen pops up over and over.

I, like you, fooled with the account settings. Nothing helped. I checked
with my server to see that I had it all set up correctly. I had. I deleted
the account and rebooted the computer and set it all up again. I keep
getting the security window again, and again, and again, and again!!!!!!!!!

Anybody have any suggestions? It's making me crazy.

Thankfully, I can go to my server's website and get my mail from there but
this computer should work the way I want it to. I spent so much money buying
new programs because nothing that works with XP will work on Vista. After my
old computer died, I would have bought an XP again had I known it'd be so
much trouble. Now this. Enough already.

Thanks for listening.

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

The mail server is working properly, since it responded to my
connection attempt. Are you able to login to webmail at
https://webmail.uoguelph.ca ?

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

It is very likely that this problem is caused by your antivirus
program. Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled,
not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If after doing the above, it still doesn't work, delete that email
account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

Thanks so much for your answer, Gary. However, my antivirus program is
Windows Live One Care. I looked through all the setting options and did not
see anything that relates to scanning email.
tuneup, backup, viruses and spyware, firewall, logging. I checked each.
Windows mail is allowed by the firewall. That is the only place it is
mentioned.
I have the phishng filter turned off.

I already deleted the account, restarted the computer and added the account
and it didn't work. I'll certainly try it again.

I'll go to the oe help site and take a look too.
Again, thank you.

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

I found that the virus and spyware monitoring can be turned either off or on.
I turned it off and it says my computer is vulnerable. I do not see the
option to turn only the email scanning off.
Thanks. Gazinga

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

The jury is still out on whether WLOC can cause problems for
Windows Mail. I uninstalled my copy of WLOC after I got a
stuck email in my Outbox.

It sounds like something in your Windows Mail is corrupted.
The only way to prove or disprove that is by temporarily
installing a different email program. You can try either
WLM:
http://get.live.com/en-us/betas/maildesktop_betas

or Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

Hi,

Yes I can login online through my webmail account, but for some reason I
cant seem to send mail from Windows Mail but can recieve, I have completed
all the steps you mentioned in previous posts, I am using Avast, I have
deleted my account and created a new one, plus I have had no problems for the
past 5 months so nothing has changed. Could a port be a problem??? If my
school had changed their security settings or port etc, would that create a
problem on my end? Or does this have something to do with Windows or a virus
etc.

Thanks again

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

If your school had changed a port number (very unlikely),
you wouldn't get as far in the process as the username/password
challenge. It is possible that they changed the security (authentication)
requirements. Try this: Go to Tools, Accounts, select the uoguelph.ca
account, Properties, Servers. Select the box for "My server requires
authentication." Click OK, and try sending.

Re: Windows Security Log in Message

Hi,

Thanks for your response, so I checked online at school and apparently we
are having a server problem that will affect local email like outlook and
thunderbird (I am assuming windows mail is the same). However I still find
it strange that I can receive from the server but not send. As well the
problem is only during high traffic times, and I am having this issue all the
time.....so i am not sure if they are related.

I did what you said, but it did not fix the problem. Not sure what else
there is that I can do.

Can I test it with another server like hotmail or something. The same way
my school one is connected????
