    Hi Maeve,

Yeah, Windows Mail does not support Hotmail (HTTP Website email).

You might consider switching to Windows Live Mail Beta (WLM). It supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail
messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.)

    For US and UK:
    http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

For non-US and non-UK locations (direct download): http://g.live.com/1rebeta/WLM_en-us

There is no indication that Microsoft will charge for Windows Live
Mail. Where are you seeing this?

Incidentally, you are posting from the future! This is caused by
the fact that your computer's time zone is set for the US west
coast but you are actually in Australia. Please fix your time zone
    setting.

    Maeve,

I am not aware of any future charging with Hotmail, Windows Live Mail Beta, or Windows Live Messenger Beta that I am using. Could you post a link to where you have seen this?

Windows Live Mail would be one of the choices.
