Vista - Adressbook under "To:/Cc:" is not the same as under the button "Contacts".

Adressbook under "To:/Cc:" is not the same as under the button "Contacts".

Hello,

Having just upgraded to Vista, I found it very "disturbing" to work
with my original Addressbook from Outlook Express which I just
imported into Windows Mail.

Indeed, unlike its absolute identical listing under "To:/Cc:/Bcc:", the
list popping up under the button "Contacts" is...not in its alphabetical
order; resp. listed only under first names instead of last names; etc.

But at OE, the button "Addressbook" was showing the SAME listing
(configuration) as when opened up under "To:/Cc:/Bcc:"...

So any help to a currently still "Newbie" would be highly appreciated...

Regards, Philippe.

Hi Philippe,

Look at the bottom of Step Two at this tutorial. It will show you how to change the sorting order in the "To:/Cc:/Bcc" area.

Re: Adressbook under "To:/Cc:" is not the same as under the button "Contacts".

Sorry Shawn, but I think you misunderstood now "my complain"...

You see, I've no problem at all with the contacts as listed under
"To:/Cc:/Bcc:", whenever I wish to establish a new email.

But the prob I have is when I click at the "fully independent" button
"Contacts"; okay. That's were I'm missing the correct alphabetical
order (according to the last name of each address!), as it is correctly
being displayed under Windows Mail, upon clicking at "To:/Cc:/Bcc:".

Regards, Philippe.

Open Contacts folder>click on the header of the column that you wish to sort
by, if that column does not exist, then add it by rt click on the column
header and select it.

Philippe,

Yes, indeed I misunderstood you. Look at the "How to Customize the Columns in the Folder Type Template" section towards the bottom at this tutorial. It will show you how to do this in the Contacts window.

Re: Adressbook under "To:/Cc:" is not the same as under the button "Contacts".

Dear Shawn,

Thanks very much for your renewed and detailed reply.

Look, I really tried it now "very hard" but still...

Well you see, I simply would like to have the absolute identical listing as
it appears currently under Windows Mail when I click at "To:/Cc:/Bcc:";
ie. in alphabetical order by last name, plus first name and mail address.
Or in other word: Like when one used to click at button "Addressbook"
under the good ol' Outlook Express...

Hmm, so do you think you could perhaps "guide me" on that??
(Would be really highly appreciated...).

Ok Philippe,

1. Open the Contacts Window.
2. Click "View" or "Views" and click "Details".
3. Double Click on each contact to open it's properties window.
4. Under "Full Name", click on the drop down arrow.
5. Select the order you want. (Last Name, First Name)
6. Click Ok.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 until all of the contacts have been changed.

That should do it,

Re: Adressbook under "To:/Cc:" is not the same as under the button "Contacts".

Hi Shawn,

Well, if that's "the only way" of doing it, I'll have of course no choice
now...but with over 1000 single entries...damn it!!
So Microsoft surely did not do a good job on "this"; that's for sure!!

Philippe,

If you want it to show "last name, first name", then this is the only way I know of.

If you would prefer to just have the "last name", then you can right click on the name column and click "Last Name". This will add a new column with the last name in it for all the contacts. You can then click and hold and drag the "Last Name" column in front of the "Name" column. You can use the same link as a reference towards the bottom of it. This way you do not have to change all the contacts one by one.
