480 authentication

I get a 480 authentication message when I try to get newsgroups. I went to
accounts and entered a username and password. Now I get a pop up message
asking me to verify my username and password every time I click on a
newsgroup or newsgroup message. not using any antivirus pgms, have several
restores and have discarded all recent upgrades. Reset new acct, can't
download newsgroups. Help!

Search the support site of your
ISP for newsgroup setup instructions.

Re: 480 authentication

Went to Cox as you suggested and found I was setting it up correctly, still
get the damned pop up request for ID and password verification every time I
click on a newsgroup. Vista won't let me download a list of newsgroups. I'm
running in a circle...

Re: 480 authentication

You never mentioned the news server name, but I take it you are not
talking about msnews.microsoft.com. Does that one work properly
for you?
If you mean the Cox news server, have you got it set up like this:
http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp...d-079427d18558

If it still does not work, go to Tools, Options, Send, News Sending Format,
Plain Text Settings, change MIME to Uuencode.
