Re: every time I open WM, I get a new Recovered Messages folder and sub folders that are empty

Your Windows Mail database is corrupted.
You have two options.
a. Go through the somewhat laborious "Reset Windows Mail" process:
Windows Mail problems
or
b. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Re: every time I open WM, I get a new Recovered Messages folder and sub folders that are empty

Think of WLM as WM + bug fixes + Hotmail access.
Other differences are largely cosmetic.
There are a few basic differences. WLM works on both XP and Vista.
WLM doesn't have a unified Inbox, it sets up separate mail folders
for each mail account.

WLM is receiving the benefit of ongoing Microsoft development
while WM is not. Unlike here, Microsoft reps participate in WLM's
newsgroup.

There is no drawback to trying WLM. If you decide you don't like
it, you merely uninstall it, and WM is back.

Many thanks for this advice, it's very helpful.

One question: If I change to WLM, what happens to the email folders and
emails that I'm keeping in WM? Do all these automatically migrate to the
proper place in WLM?

Best,
Bud

Theoretically, but not satisfactorily in my experience.

In most cases the migration is automatic. There is no harm in trying
it out. If you don't like WLM, merely uninstall it, and WM is back.

I'm using Windows Live Mail now, and it seems just great! Many thanks again.

Re: every time I open WM, I get a new Recovered Messages folder an

Thanks for the feedback. If you haven't done so already, be sure
to get the final version which was released a few days ago (build 12.0.1606).
