The Connection to the server has failed...

I just tried to set up windows mail on my laptop to open my school mail
account, following the directions on the schools website. However, when I
tried to open my mail in windows mail I recieved an error message that said
that 'the connection to the server has failed. Your IMAP command could not be
sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example,
indicate a lack of memory on your system.'
I don't have any problem using my internet normally to browse or viewing my
email through a browser window and I also don't have the 'log on using Secure
password Authentication' box checked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: The Connection to the server has failed...

Which antivirus are you running?
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or
Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Re: The Connection to the server has failed...

I don't have either of those running on my computer, I have Trend Micro
PC-Cillin. And for that I turned off the Spam Email filter because it was
the only email-headed thing that I found when i looked through everything
earlier.

Re: The Connection to the server has failed...

I take it you have an IMAP account? I'm not as fluent with IMAP
troubleshooting as I am with POP issues. Can you share with us
the school website where you got the setup instructions?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

Re: The Connection to the server has failed...

So this is a VISTA problem? How stupid can Windows Mail developers be to not
be compatible with major third party AntiVirus vendors??? Who wants to use
Windows Mail anyway???

Re: The Connection to the server has failed...

Security programs like an antivirus need to hook deeply into the
operating system. As such they will require extensive modification
whenever a new operating system (like Vista) comes out.
The other AV vendors managed to do it, McAfee and Norton did not.
