For Gary VanderMolen - Windows Email probs

I notice you over and over and over stress to people about the
incompatibility of McAfee and Norton with Windows Mail. When I came to this
ng, I was iffy about the incompatibility as my computer came with three
months of free McAfee and it is nationally known and highly rated. I have
used Norton for years before and thought I liked but found out it was the
cause of slowing down my computer.

Anyway, I bought a new computer using Windows Vista Home Edition and three
months of free McAfee which is due to expire next month. I didn't want to
renew it unless there was a fix, so I emailed McAfee and told them my email
problems; i.e., buttons not working, deleted items won't delete even though
my settings are set to delete them when I close out the email. When
receiving an email with a photo, I could open it at first, but when I went
back to look at it it was gone until I rebooted the computer. When on an
ng, the new messages wouldn't download. I couldn't send messages in email.
Sometimes the messages disappeared from the view pane, as it did in my
email. The only time everything worked was the first few minutes after
rebooting the computer so I constantly had to reboot to send and receive
messages and reread messages.

I uninstalled McAfee, all the problems went away and my computer was faster.
I then reinstalled it and all the problems came back. I emailed McAfee to
get a fix, received a Service Request number seven days ago and never
received an answer. Because my computer had no protection I quick ran out
and bought PC-cillin and it works wonderfully.

At your suggestion and others, I tried to download the AVG and kept getting
corrupted files and because I'm on dial-up and it's a large file I just
couldn't get it to download fully. Many computer techs highly recommended
the AVG or the PC-cillin program.

Anyway, just thought I'd tell you and anybody that reads this that though
you are posting until you are blue in the face about the incompatibility of
McAfee and Norton with Vista, you are soooooo right!!!

Thanks for your help!!

Chocolic

Re: For Gary VanderMolen - Windows Email probs

TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE !!

Like Chocolic, I too was experiencing issues with Windows Mail whilst
running McAfee antivirus software. My McAfee software also came free (for 3
months) with a new Vista PC which I bought a few days ago.
..
I set up all my family's user accounts and Windows Mail accounts, and
everything went well for the first day. All WM accounts worked OK initially,
but then I loaded my copy of MS Office XP, for which I could not find my
registration code. This changed the default mailer from WM to Outlook, but
since I could not find my jewel case with the Windows key, I could not run my
Office XP applications, so I had to uninstall it. This was OK, since I'll be
looking to buy a "Vista-compatible" version of MS Office anyway (probably
Office 2007), and besides I was happy enough with Windows Mail rather than
Outlook.
..
However, this uninstallation of Office XP is when my troubles started.
Initially all the shortcuts I had set up for WM on all the family's accounts
would not link anywhere. I could resolve this, but then had to re-import all
the OE folders/mails from my old OE6 setup. Three of the four accounts
seemed to be OK, but my own WM account (administrator) would just not work
reasonably. It displayed many of the characteristics found in this newsgroup
- sometimes it would say my POP3's smtp was wrong and couldn't connect (even
though other family members' accounts were fine); sometimes I could access my
Inbox, but then if I went to an Imported folder, I could not see the mails in
there. Then when I would go back to my Inbox, I could then not see the
contents of this either, even though I could see it two clicks before.
Sometimes I could move mails between folders or perform deletions, and other
times not. In all events, the WM program became problematic and unreliable.
..
Other times I would get the three messages including (sorry - from memory)
the suggestion that WM was not set up correctly, or had run out of memory or
disk space, ending in the MSOE.dll error. I even tried fixing this by
running the independent WMUtil application, and separately by deleting the
contents of the Message Store locations. But whatever I did, when I set up
all my info again (set up account & re-run Import from OE), I would get some
weird combination of the previous errors, and effectively be unable to use WM.
..
Okay, so back to the newsgroups for any further tips today, when I came upon
Chocolic's mail 'For Gary...'. Quite frankly I had seen loads of Gary's (&
others') posts advising about WM's problems with Antivirus software,
particularly McAfee. I really didn't want to believe that this could be the
reason that my WM wasn't working.... Surely it had to be down to the
install/uninstall of Office, or the WMUtil executable files that I ran, or
the countless mail account deletions & recreations I had done (or some
combination of the above) - after all, the problem was only affecting one of
the four WM accounts on my machine!
..
So anyway, despite having three months McAfee 'protection' to lose, I went
ahead and uninstalled the software. Almost like magic my Windows Mail
account was back together at the reboot, with the Inbox running fine, and all
areas including Imported Folder data accessible and movable. I couldn't
believe it! I logged off and on at least 5 times to make sure it wasn't a
fluke - it wasn't.
..
So, in summary, I would like to reiterate what Chocolic has said - Gary and
these other guys really DO know what they're talking about. If you're
suffering any of these issues which Gary and the other MVPs advise might be
down to your antivirus software - BELIEVE THEM - they are probably right!

Cheers
Dave

Do you mean that you can't delete the Deleted Items folder or that you can't
delete what's in it. Try Right clicking it and selecting Empty "Deleted
Items" Folder.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
As for the antivirus affecting some user accounts but not others,
I use the analogy with Russian roulette. Many times you can pull
the trigger and nothing bad happens. Eventually it probably will,
though.

Which fix did you try? Try the steps given here:
Windows Mail problems

However, do not proceed with the final section labeled "How to Reset
Windows Mail" unless you are an advanced user who is familiar with
how to use Windows Explorer.
