i never got an answer but I figured it out: You can either rename the files
in order or create a series of "captions" in number order. Then you click on
the little box at the top of the window showing the pictures, click on sort,
and choose "sort by file" or "sort by caption."
P.S. If you're going to download to a CD, you should change the filenames,
because, as I learned to my chagrin, the CD will keep the pictures arranged
by filename, no matter what the caption names.
