CDs not playing

hello there. i bought a new philips laptop with vista home prem. it plays
some of my cds but not all. the cds that i am playing are all originals and
they are not stratched or damaged. when i play the cds in another laptop with
windows xp they play as normal.
in my laptop the system will not reconise that there is even a cd in the
drive and when i go to my computer and click on the e drive ..nothing
happens. it acts like there is no cd there when there is.
in my friends laptop when you put in the same cd it plays as normal.
can you help me. why does it play some and not the others. is it a software
problem?? can u make it work? I dont think that it should be doing this.
Thanks

RE: CDs not playing

Sorry.. Such a mess I made

What I wanted to write was, that we have the exact same problem, and I would
be happy to get some answers as soon as possible!

Allana have you tried to play a DVD in your pc? Because I can play DVD's
with no problems, but as soon as I put in a cd it just says some strange
sounds and that is it.

HELP US!

RE: CDs not playing

I can play dvds all right but when you put in a cd...you hear all the little
noises at first like it wants to do something but then ....nothing happens
after that. If this is what is means to have windows vista where i can't even
play my cds then...what's the point??????

Re: CDs not playing

I became curious while reading the above posts, what program did you use to burn the music CD's and do your Data CD's work? What program did you use to burn the Data CD's.
I ask because I have used Nero for all my CD's since Windows 95,98 and XP and they all work well on my vista machine. ( Music and Data).
Some people have tried going to a friends computer and transfering the files to a flash drive and copying to their hard drive then burning them with their Vista. ( This is for the people whose machines show an empty CD).
A lot of people have had success by updating their "firmware" for their specific CD/DVD roms/Burners. It would sure be nice if someone came up with an easier solution.

Re: CDs not playing

Thanks dbknox but you are way ahead of me. You can tell by my name that I am very un-nerdy ie I am a computer novice.
The CDs I refer to are all pre-recorded albums bought from various retail outlets. When I try to play or rip them using windows media player some work OK and some just don't work at all nor are they even acknowledged.
Perhaps my computer doesn't like some of my music choices. Seriously though HELP!

Re: CDs not playing

hey, im not a nerd either, download Itunes. First, its made by apple, its a
great program that will get your cds playing before you can say fittzgibbon.
Also, ITS MEDIA PLAYER, made by microsoft, theres bound to be problems, why
do you think there are so many newsgroups about it? But anyways, you dont
have to have an ipod to use itunes, just go to www.apple.com and go to
downloads, and download the newest version. By the way, what kind of music
do you listen to?

Re: CDs not playing

Many thanks, ewastudent, I will try Itunes. My music? I'm a grandfather, I've got classics for me, Soppy country stuff for the love of my life and some rock and roll for the kids to dance to. I wonder if Itunes will play DVD movies?
