Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

New Dell computer running that crappy Windows Vista system. After editing
any JPEG in Windows Photo Gallery, I get a pop up that "changes to this
picture cannot be saved because Photo Gallery has experienced a problem".
These are regular JPEG's that are on my desktop. They are not locked or
funny file names, or any of the other obvious problems. Anybody out there
able to help a cpu novice on this one? My wife is ready to throw this brand
new computer away because of the problems running anything on Vista. BTW,
pretty ironic, it is trying to block me out of this site, that it recommends
I go to with problems.

RE: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

Mine too - new Dell computer - when trying to save changes to a single JPEG i
get the error message and then an image of the dell DSC icon appears, and
this i think is preventing the save as it is an icon file. Why this happens
i do not know but some (but not all) of my jpegs are from a sony camera that
names its file DSC00123 etc. Anyone any ideas?

RE: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

I have this exact issue. I have a Dell too (XPS 600) which I upgrade with a
new install from Windows XP to Vista. I called dell and they refuse to help
because I upgraded and they will only support Windows XP on this machine.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

How are you trying to save the picture?

WPG "auto-saves" the changes you've made to a picture. There's no action you
need to take to save it.
You also have the option to undo any changes you've made and revert to the
original.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

I am having the same problem with a Gateway computer. Have been able to
edit and save before; now all of a sudden I get an error message "Photo
can not be saved because of a problem with Photo Gallery". Have
downloaded the Windows Live Photo Gallery in the hopes that would take
care of the problem; but problem still exists.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

Hi. I am new to the forum. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium (with current updates.)

I am having this same problem; however, I seem to have stumbled on a temporary 'fix.' When I get this error, I open Paint from Windows Photo Gallery (WPG), and just click on File and just Save (I made no changes in Paint.) When I go back to WPG, any changes I make will 'autosave.' It's an annoying extra step, but at least I'm not completely stalled. It seems to 'unlock' the file, if that is what the problem was.

I am only a GUI user, and keep hunting and clicking until I find a solution (or not.) I have no idea why this works. It also works if I use any other photo editor program (i.e. Adobe Photoshop Elements) and then go back to WPG.

I haven't worked on my photo editing for a while, so I don't know when this problem started or what triggered it, so I didn't want to try the Restore plan. I have no idea how far I would have to go back.

As I said, I'm no computer expert, but I thought I'd share this in case it helps point to a solution.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

Thanks, momtodogs. I will certainly try your fix. I prefer to use
Photo Gallery because my Paint doesn't have a "crop". But have found
that Paint does a better job of resizing. Will let this board know if
your solution works for me.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

Yeah, momtodogs, your solution to the Photo Gallery problem works for me
also. How in the world did you ever think to open an edited picture in
Paint to save? Brilliant idea.

Re: Windows Photo Gallery can't save pictures after editing

I think you'll like this more then Photo Gallery.

http://paint.net/

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run
Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support
for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful
and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly
help, tutorials, and plugins.
It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project
mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the
alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free
replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has
grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been
compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe®
Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.
