    Audio Recorder Volume Control

I bought a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium recently and was shocked to
discover that I was unable to find Audio Recording Volume Control. I had
another computer with Windows and enjoyed the ability to adjust the recording
volume as well as select the source (e.g. microphone, cd, all sounds the
computer plays, line-in). I understand that some of these features have to do
with the particular sound card. But I cannot find even the main recording
    volume control slider.
