Re: Windows media player stopped working

I thought "sfc /scannow" when run with administrator privileges would give
you the chance to fix that up... ?

Re: Windows media player stopped working

I haven't replaced my mf.dll with the previous posters link but on running "sfc /scannow" I receive the following notice:

Windows Resource Protection found some corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Re: Windows media player stopped working

The clarification of importance would be: did you run that with
administrative credentials? If you ran it from cmd.exe when you run cmd.exe
as an administrator, it could potentially help you fix the issue. If not,
it could not help you fix the issue.

Re: Windows media player stopped working

Yes, I was only able to run it as an administrator in the first place, the command doesn't work for me otherwise.

Re: Windows media player stopped working

I just got the same "Windows media player stopped working" dialog when I double-clicked on an avi file. The only option is "close program", and that works great - it silently closes. Sure would appreciate some distinct corrective steps to fix it.

Re: Windows media player stopped working

I updated my SigmaTel audio driver, recommended to me by my Dell Support Center application and this allowed me to finally view Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Update. Having updated to Service Pack 1 Windows Media Player seems to be behaving normally!

Re: Windows media player stopped working

Do you have ScrchPg.dll on your system? That might cause this type of
error.

Re: Windows media player stopped working

I have been fighting with this problem for about a month.

In my case I haven't installed any of the programs that have been cited as causing this.

I tried re-registering the DLL as specified in some forums which didn't help.

Today I fixed it. By deleting all files (including hidden, system and folders) in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM

I found this fix at The Windows Media Digital Rights Management system may not work if your computer hardware changes

Of course, the problem description on the MS page does not match OUR symptom, but at least in my case, a corrupted DRM was my issue.
