No audio during video playback in media player

This started a couple of days ago. When I go to play any video file in media
player there is no sound. I get no error messages, everything appears to be
working there is just no sound. This affects all formats of video file, but
does not affect audio files, which play as normal and have sound. Also this
problem is localised to media player, as media centre still plays my video
files as normal with sound.

If anyone has any ideas then please help me this is driving me mad. My only
solution at the moment is to find an alt. media player to use.

I installed a couple of programs, one being easy video converter, the first
thing I tried was uninstalling it, but it didn't help, so then I was going to
use system restore only to find it doesn't work.

I do not have an intel express chipset.

I have since installed real player which works fine, but would still like to
get media player working.
