All speakers worked fine under 'test mode' but would only play mp3's etc from the front. (The guys that built my PC had just installed the basic drivers) I had to enable 'CMSS' (Surround Sound) to get my rear speakers working. If it's not Creative....then...uh...I don't know. HTH |

| | Re: Surround Sound The MP3 codec only works through 2 channels. The only audio formats that work on more than 2 channels, as far as I know, are AC3, Dolby Digital and DTS. | Vista Ultimate x64 | Re: Surround Sound Since Mp3s and most other music do not have surround information encoded in them you have to use some other software or driver to expand the channels to the 4/5/7.1 format. I found an option in my settings speaker fill. I have a HP HDX9494 notebook with the included soundcard which is 7.1. If you go to Control Panel->Sound and on the Playback tab look for your speakers, click on properties. (Make sure they are not being used at the time i.e. WM is closed or stopped ) I have a tab called Enhacements that contains a speaker fill option that will use the rest of the speaker and not just the left and right fronts. The Provider is Microsoft so it should theoretically be in everyones laptop if the setup is not customized. Another route to go is SRS Labs, SRS Audio Sandbox. This is a $25 plug-in that gives you tons more options and makes your WM rock. It has a feature called Circle Surround that converts your 2 channel stereo in to surround sound and gives you great control over speaker balance as well as frequency ( equalizer ) control. Worth every penny although it can be a bit of a pain to setup at first. They have a 14 day trial but be careful if you are running x64 because it won't install. You have to go to the FAQ and under the 64 bit question they have a link to the 64bit version. Hope this helps both worked for me. Shannon McCoy |
