Window media player cannot play WMV files

I tried download a codec package from Microsoft's download site but it says
it does not work with Windows Vista. How can I get Vista Home Premium to play
WMV files, I am trying to look at a xbox trailer file. Is there a way to get
a downgraded copy of XP media center edition for my Vista laptop until Vista
is finished and Microsofts software will work with it.

WMV's play in VLC media player so why not Windows media player?

Re: Window media player cannot play WMV files

WMV files work on Windows Vista by default. All sorts of fun things (codec
packs are not your friend) like to stomp on Windows settings.

What happens when you try this?

You do not need any codec packages here. They would not help you. This was
already working until it got broken. =\ What changed?

Was VLC installed by itself or with other things?
