Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Whenever I go to the "Change your color schemes" window in control panel, I
see the option to enable transparent glass. When I click the Okay button,
absolutely nothing happens. The same applies to the Cancel button. This
occurs regardless of setting changes - it even happens when no settings have
been changed. Additionally, clicking the "Show color mixer" dropdown does not
do anything either.

I am currently running 5384 with 896MB Physical RAM and 128 Video RAM with a
3.06GHz Pentium 4 Processor.

Your video driver may not support glass on your Vista build. I don't
know what either of these are so can't comment further.

Oops my eyes skipped over the 5384 ... but you still aren't likely to
see Vista improvements until 5465+ (again dependent on your video driver).

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

I am using the ATI Radeon Catalyst Drivers which I should think would support
Aero Glass. As far as the build, I am running Vista 5384 as stated in the
last paragraph of the first post.

I have heard from friends that the enable glass checkbox does not appear if
your hardware does not meet the Aero Glass requirements which inclines me to
believe that it is compatible. Regardless of computability, the Cancel button
should work.

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Your build is quite old and there were all sorts of bugs IIRC with that
screen. I found that glass support came and went rather erratically
until a much later build.

If you can find a better (Vista-compatible) driver then you may have
more luck, otherwise you're probably stuck until you get another build.

RE: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Maybe upgrade RAM to 1 GB or more, like how MS says on its "Get Ready"
website. To get aero glass transparency, need to meet "Premium Ready"
requirement. Also, how big and resolution of display? 128 VRAM shared or
not shared? If large & high rez display, may need more than 128 MB of VRAM.

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Aero Glass ran fine on my Gateway computer with 768 mb of RAM. I now
have 1.5 gb of RAM. Avoid video cared that use 'shared' RAM. That is a
code for 'Stealing System RAM'.

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Hmm...then Microsoft should properly update its sys req for Aero on its web
site to not confuse people!

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

My Intel Graphics chip uses all shared RAM (it has none of its own) and
Vista Aero Glas runs on it without any problem as long as I allow it to use
up to 128MB of shared RAM instead of just 64MB with a 1280x1024 Flat Panel
display.

Re: Cannot Enable Transparent Glass

Which Intel chip and how do you allocate RAM to 128?

TIA.
