Windows Media Player xp on vista

I accidentally (i don't know how) got windows media player 9 xp on vista and
it says it isn't compatible. the windows site says i can't download media
player 11 because it came pre-installed on my computer. i really need to know
what to do. if i need to, i have the original disk, but i don't want to
reformat my drive.

If John's tips don't work - what's the exact error message that you get when
you try to run the player?
