Stuttering DVD playback

I have a weird problem when playing DVDs. DVD Video is choppy and stutters
ALOT. Use WMP and tried PowerDVD, though I was notified of a compatibility
issue with PowerDVD 6.0 when installed on Vista beta 2. However, online
videos, such as ones from MSNBC work fine. My graphics card is a Geforce FX
5200 PCI (not PCI-express) with 256 MB video memory (I was one of those
people who bought a system without an AGP slot several years ago...man I
regret it!). Have 1 GB of dual channel DDR memory. When running XP Home
SP2, any video playback (online, DVD, etc) worked smoothly and no stuttering
of video, even with the PCI graphics card. I don't believe that it is the
fault of the graphics card b/c Aero Glass runs perfectly at 1440 X 900
resolution (widescreen), but I am not sure.

If anyone knows why I am experiencing stuttering DVD playback, please reply
to my post ASAP. Thanks.

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

I assume that you have the Vista drivers for your 5200 card installed.
Do you also have a TV tuner card/ If yes do you have any trouble with it?
Have you tried playing the DVD in Vista Media Center instead of in SMP?

Drivers for card are for Vista. don't have tv tuner card. tried playing DVD
in Media Center, and same stuttering happens...btw, in beta 2, it takes
forever for MC to load

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Does the audio also stutter? If yes then the problem is not video card
related it is Decoder related which could even be related to your audio card
drivers.
Have you tried both video and Film based DVDs.?
One user found that a similiar problem was caused by his DVD drive and/or
the specific DVD media he was trying to watch.

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Oh yeah...I forget to mention that...the audio stutters too. Audio card
drivers were installed automatically from WUpdate upon installation of beta 2
- dated 2006. So problem may exist with the decoder? Haven't tried a huge
variety of DVDs yet.

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Since the audio also stutters the decoder is unable to keep up with the
required decoding or the data from the source DVD is not arriving fast
enough from the actual DVD drive. I suspect that the problem is with the DVD
drive or the actual DVD media.
Is any other device connected to the same IDE bus as the DVD drive? If so
what is it and is it possibly in use when playing a DVD?

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

I have a DVD ROM drive as master and DVD-RW drive as slave. RW drive doesn't
seem to be in use when I play DVDs on my ROM drive. Thing is, never had any
DVD playback problems in XP, so wouldn't it be a problem with the decoder,
not the drive? Perhaps a buggy decoder? Both drives are pretty much brand
new (got RW drive just weeks ago).

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Playing DVD movies on WMP 11 is hopeless. However, if you install
NVidia's decoder (Purevideo), DVD playback in Media Center is much better.

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Are you using the latest BIOS version for your MOBO?
Are you trying to play regular comercial Film DVDs or DVDs that you have
made?
What is your CPU utilization when playing a DVD?
Any entires in the event logs that might suggest a problem?

Re: Stuttering DVD playback

Isn't it a trial version (30 day)? And does it support Vista b2 (didn't say
so in the sys requirements)?
