Photo Viewing in Vista

I used whatever the default program was in XP to view (not edit) photos and
it was great! I am having a terrible time in coming up with the same
program in Vista. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get the
same program in Vista?

Re: Photo Viewing in Vista

XP's Picture and Fax Viewer was replaced in Vista by Photo Gallery. Photo
Gallery has more functions but its preview mode (double click an image or
click Preview button in the Pictures folder) seems to include the same ones
as the old viewer did.

Re: Photo Viewing in Vista

Thank You! Now, all I have to do is set the file extension defaults to be
opened by Photo Gallery?

Re: Photo Viewing in Vista

If you installed photo editing software it might have taken over those
extensions, so yes you might have to reset them to Photo Gallery. I didn't
allow any other apps to take over the photo extensions so all the supported
picture formats still Preview in Photo Gallery by default.

Re: Photo Viewing in Vista

Would you know where there is a list of "supported formats"? I can make my
own list, I guess, but if there happens to be one somewhere I'd like to use
it.

Re: *Ooops* Photo Viewing in Vista

Sorry...wrong link...try
the following:

Windows Photo Gallery: FAQ

or...
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...5406b1033.mspx

What picture file formats and video file
formats are supported by Photo Gallery?

or...
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...033.mspx#ELFAC

What picture file formats are supported by
Photo Gallery? Photo Gallery will show pictures
with any of these file types:

.. BMP, . JPEG, . JFIF, . TIFF, . PNG, . WDP

If Windows Movie Maker is installed, Photo
Gallery will also play videos in these file types:

.. ASF, . AVI, . MPEG, . WMV

Note: Not all editions of Windows Vista come
with Windows Movie Maker installed.

Re: Photo Viewing in Vista

The Vista help file for Photo Gallery lists all the image file formats that
it supports:
BMP, JPEG, JFIF, TIFF, PNG, WDP.

Photo Gallery can also play video types - AVI, ASF, MPEG and WMV.

There are many other picture file formats that aren't supported by Photo
Gallery. To view or convert those into a usable type you'd need 3rd party
software, like IrfanView which supports a large list picture and media file
formats. Including audio and video file types, IrfanView can handle:

AIF, ANI, AU, AVI, AWD, B3D, BMP, CAM, CLP, CPT, CRW/CR2, CUR, DAT, DCM/ACR,
DCX, DDS, DIB, DJVU, DLL/EXE, DXF/DWG/HPGL/CGM/SVG, ECW, EMF, EPS/PS/PDF,
FITS, FLI/FLC, FPX, FSH, G3, GIF, HDP/WDP, HDR, ICL, ICO, IFF/LBM, IMG, JP2,
JPG/JPEG, JPM, KDC, LDF, LWF, Mac PICT, MED, MID, MNG/JNG, MOV, MP3,
MPG/MPEG¹, MrSID, NLM/NOL/NGG/NSL/OTB/GSM, OGG, PBM, PCX, PDF, PGM, PIC,
PhotoCD, PNG, PPM, PSD, PSP, PVR, QTIF, RAS/SUN, RealAudio, RAW, RLE, RMI,
SFF, SFW, SGI/RGB, MrSID, SWF, SND¹, TGA, TIF/TIFF, TTF, TXT, WAD, WAL, WAV,
WBMP, WMF, WMA, WMV, XBM, XPM, (DNG, EEF, NEF, ORF, RAF, MRW, DCR, PEF, SRF,
X3F).
